OpenDoorUkraine.NL (ODU) is a charitable non-profit organisation that helps communities affected by the war to rebuild housing and social infrastructure. ODU was established in December 2018 with its primary mission to. strengthen ties between the Netherlands and Ukraine by supporting businesses, humanitarian organizations, civil society actors, and cultural initiatives. The organization facilitates collaboration through three thematic areas: economy, humanitarian affairs, and culture & civil society. ODU has several notable programmes, in particular a new «Build Back Bio» program, which was launched in partnership with Hempire UA and Rawblox. This 4-years program aims to construct 450 bio-based homes in Ukraine using sustainable materials like straw and hemp. The project is funded by a €4 million grant from the Netherlands Government Enterprise Agency and focuses on providing affordable, energy-efficient housing for rural families affected by war.

Additionally, OpenDoorUkraine.NL is involved in establishing the Veteran Mental Health Centre of Excellence (VMHCE) to provide high-quality mental healthcare services in Kyiv for Ukrainian veterans. The organization also supports various humanitarian projects, such as funding the «I Am Kherson» program, which delivers rehabilitation equipment to individuals with limited mobility in the Kherson region.

As Communication and Social Media Manager, you will lead the outreach and storytelling efforts of Build Back Bio. You will work closely with our project, advocacy, and technical teams to design and execute two major national campaigns led by our Ukrainian partners —the Bio-Based Building Campaign and the Labour Rights Campaign — while also coordinating media, events, and content to educate, inspire, and engage diverse Ukrainian audiences.

Key Responsibilities:

Campaign Coordination

  • Support the design and execution of the Bio-Based Building Campaign, in partnership with the Ukrainian Manufacturing Union, targeting 4,000 companies with a focus on green construction practices, circular materials, and the EU Green Deal standards.
  • Lead communication efforts for the Labour Campaign in collaboration with PROFBUD, highlighting ethical employment standards and compliance with new audit systems for labour rights in the construction sector.
  • Ensure both campaigns are integrated across media channels, events, and public-facing outputs.

Public Engagement & Community Outreach

  • Organise and promote town hall meetings in conflict-affected hromadas to inform and engage IDPs on sustainable housing and reconstruction options.
  • Generate public support and understanding of bio-based building through human-centred stories, public exhibitions, and art-based storytelling (e.g., mosaic façades).
  • Collaborate with project partners to increase awareness of training opportunities for IDPs in green construction (target: 60 IDPs/year trained).

Content Strategy & Social Media

  • Develop and maintain a robust editorial calendar aligned with campaign goals and project milestones.
  • Create compelling, shareable content (video, infographics, articles, social media posts) that resonates with target audiences across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and TikTok.
  • Translate technical or policy content into accessible messages for diverse audiences.

Media Relations & Visibility

  • Write press releases, media kits, and op-eds; coordinate interviews and media visits to project sites.
  • Cultivate relationships with Ukrainian and international media to generate interviews and articles.
  • Prepare regular reports on media exposure, including segmentation of audience reach, engagement metrics, and campaign effectiveness.

Key Requirements

  • Professional Experience: 3−5 years in communications, digital campaigning, media relations, or advocacy, preferably in the humanitarian, development, or sustainability sectors.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in Ukrainian and English (required); Russian an asset.
  • Campaign & Digital Expertise: Experience planning and executing public-facing campaigns and with tools like Meta Business Suite, Canva, and video editing software.
  • Storytelling & Writing: Proven ability to create compelling, human-centred stories and translate technical content into accessible narratives.
  • Event Management: Track record in coordinating public events, town halls, or exhibitions.
  • Monitoring & Reporting: Skilled in tracking social media analytics and producing performance reports.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Comfortable liaising with trade unions, public officials, community leaders, and media outlets.
  • Cultural Competence: Experience working in or with conflict-affected or post-war environments is an asset.
  • Independence & Initiative: Self-motivated with the ability to take ownership of the communication strategy while working within a larger project team.
